H1N1 Flu Update

Lexington ISD is monitoring the H1N1 flu virus closely and participating with the Office of Emergency Management in regular conferences.  To date, most illness from the H1N1 influenza virus has been mild to moderate, but as with seasonal influenza, there have been cases of very severe illness and several deaths in Texas. Some persons are at higher risk of severe disease or complications from influenza. To prevent spread of illness, it is important to follow preventative measures to avoid catching the flu and also measures to keep form infecting others. For more information on preventing influenza, taking care of an ill person at home, and other influenza issues, go to Families and Individuals on the www.texasflu.org site.

At this time the Center for Disease Control and the Texas Health Services Department are not recommending the closure of schools or other institutions as a measure to prevent the spread of H1N1. The State of Texas continues to simultaneously prepare for and respond to the H1N1 virus across the state. The H1N1 vaccine is beginning to arrive in Texas and be distributed. The H1N1 influenza virus is now considered widespread in Texas. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep parents informed as the season develops.
