"Dyslexia" means a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by
difficulty learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction,
adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity.
If your child is having difficulties in the areas of language (reading,
writing, and spelling) and exhibits some of the characteristics listed, please
contact your child’s teacher.
Many students with dyslexia will exhibit difficulty in some, but not all, of
the following areas:
- Decoding words
- Learning the alphabet in correct sequence
- Learning the names of letters and their correct sounds
- Hearing sounds in words
- Reading fluency
- Reading single words in isolation
- Reading comprehension
- Spelling
- Expressing thoughts in written form
- Handwriting
- Inaccurate and labored oral reading
- Confusion with right or left handedness
- Family history of similar problems
A committee of informed educators makes decisions about dyslexia assessment,
identification, and placement into the most appropriate educational setting.
Parents are invited and encouraged to attend the committee meeting concerning
their child. Project Read and the Wilson Reading Program are the districts dyslexia program that is an option for students
identified with dyslexic tendencies.
